Trailblazer Speedometer Problems
There's several problems that arise on 03-06 Trailblazer instrument clusters when they begin to go out and it can be a bit difficult to tell which problem you are suffering from at first. To determine if you can repair your instrument cluster yourself it's important to understand what problem yours actually has.
1. Stuck needles: Needles "stick" in one position, sometimes ratcheting up or back down erratically, and sometimes getting stuck in one position permanently. Occasionally the needle will return to zero when the vehicle is shut off but not always.
2. Needle is "pegged out": This describes a needle which has spun completely over to it's max reading or beyond.
3. Double speed: Instrument cluster gauge(s) reads roughly double the actual speed
4. Half speed: Speedometer reads roughly half the actual speed
If your are experiencing 1-4 or any combination of those your instrument cluster can be rebuild reasonably easy at home in your garage. Familiarity with soldering and de-soldering components on a circuit board will be helpful but isn't required as long as you can learn by instruction.
5. Dead cluster: All gauges have suddenly died, all at once.
6. Right gauges out: 4 gauges on the right including Volts, Oil Pressure, Fuel and Water Temperature have suddenly died, all at once and often accompanied by a dead electronic display
7. PRNDL or Odometer Display Dead: PRNDL or mileage reading is dim, dark, flickers or completely out.
Symptoms 5-7 are typically sign of a more serious problem with the cluster and is generally not repairable at home.
